Sir John Jennings, who has died aged 87, was an oilfield geologist who
rose to be chairman of Shell during a period marked by turbulence in the
energy giant’s external relations...

He remained a geologist at heart and was never happier than when digging
up rocks and getting his hands dirty

In common with Sir George Bull whose death was reported here
not long ago,it appears that Sir John's death as an octogenarian
occurred in the lifetime of his predecessor's predecessor...
Sir Peter Baxendell anticipating a 100th birthday in February
decades after retiring from the Royal Dutch/Shell Group just
as Sir Stanley Grinstead apparently reached that milestone in
June.

In each case the centenarian's tenure occurred at a predecessor
of the current entity,Sir Peter and Sir John both heading "Shell"
Transport and Trading while Sir John missed out on chairing the
overarching Group that has since become a single entity, and
Sir Stanley heading Grand Metropolitan long before Sir George
combined it with Guinness to form Diageo.

[If one could forgive a Styble-ism...for long decades the
"Shell" Transport and Trading Company preferred to put the
word "Shell" in quotation marks in its corporate name to
indicate that this was strictly its name and not an indication
that transported or traded seashells (though the founders'
father had in fact done that)].

The World Trade Center towers MUST rise again,
at least as tall as before...or terror has triumphed.
