JULIO Iglesias Puga, a gynaecologist whose name was made famous
worldwide by his singing son and grandson, but charted his own ascent
among Spain's medical community, has died. He was 90.

Iglesias, the father of singer Julio and grandfather of pop singer
Enrique, died at the San Carlos Clinic in the capital, a hospital
spokesman said.
The cause of death was not revealed, but Spanish National Radio said it
was a heart attack. Funeral details were not announced.

Iglesias had been one of the youngest doctors ever to work for the
country's state-run health-care system. He later helped found the
Madrid Maternity Clinic, becoming the head of its sterility,
infertility and family planning unit.

He married Rosario de la Cierva y Perinon in 1943, with whom he had two
sons, Julio and Carlos. They divorced in 1983, but he remarried at the
age of 85 to then-42-year-old Ronna Keit in Florida. They had a son,
Jaime, in May 2004. Earlier this year, Iglesias told reporters that he
and Keit were expecting another child in 2006.

Despite his son's fame, Iglesias encountered notoriety of his own when
he was kidnapped by the armed group ETA in December 1981 and held
captive until January 1982, when he was freed by police in Trasmoz near
the eastern city of Zaragoza.
