Joe McCarthy wed his staffer Jean Kerr, 30, in 1953. She'd be around 83
now. Is she still alive? They adopted a daughter in 1957, just before
he died. The kid would be 49 now.

...newsreel footage of the McCarthy wedding reception was incorporated
into the opening sequence of THE FRONT...

I laugh when I read the word "staffer" as applied to Jean Kerr. On
the Internet, you can also find such quaint descriptives like ...
"receptionist," "researcher," "secretary" and "aide."
Jean Kerr was not only the driving force behind McCarthy ... she was
1000 times worse.
She was a lot more than his chief staffer ... She not only wrote his
speeches but "McCarthyism: The Fight for America" is almost all Jean
Kerr's work.
It was also Jean Kerr (The Beast With Horns) who was behind McCarthy's
attack on George Marshall and it was Kerr who was responsible for the
*photograph* of Millard Tydings and Earl Browder, the Communist Party
leader.
...thus, I assume, Kerr was the pattern source for Raymond Shaw's mother
in THE MANCHURIAN CANDIDATE as much as Johnny Iselin was an analogue for
Tail Gunner Joe?...

The constant leaks about McCarthy being a homosexual were in
retaliation for the sleazy things Jean Kerr set in motion.

I really liked her play "Please Don't Eat the Daisies," though. ;-)

the Jean Kerr who wrote the book (later play and TV show) "Please
Don't Eat the Daisies" was married to drama critic Walter Kerr.

She was 22 not 30 when she married Joe Mc Carthy who was 45. She died at age 55 in 1979 of a stroke. The daughter’s name is Tierney Grinivac (married). She is alive and active in animal rights.
