The 12th Marquess of Lothian, KCVO, has died at the age of 82.

Peter Francis Walter Kerr, was the 12th Marquess, Lord Newbattle, Earl
of Lothian, Baron Jedburgh, Earl of Ancram, Baron Kerr of Nisbet,
Baron Long-Newton of Dolphinston, Viscount of Brien, Baron Kerr of
Newbattle, Baron Ker.

He served as Lord Warden of the Stannaries and Keeper of the Privy Seal
of the Duchy of Cornwall, 1977-83.

He was born 8 September, 1922, the son of Capt William Andrew Kerr, RN,
by his wife Marie Constance Annabel, daughter of Capt William Walter
Raleigh Kerr, and was educated at Ampleforth and Chrst Church, Oxford.

He succeeded to the family honours on the death of his cousin in 1940.

Career: Lieutenant, Scots Guards, 1943; Member of the British
Delegation to the United Nations General Assembly, 1956-57; European
Parliament, 1973; UK Delegate to the Council of Europe and the WEU,
1959; Parliamentary Private Secretary to the Foreign Secretary (the
Earl of Home), 1960-63; a Lord-in-Waiting (Government Whip) House of
Lords, 1962-63, 1972-73; Joint Parliamentary Secretary, Ministry of
Health, April-October, 1964; Parliamentary Under Secretary of State,
Foreign and Commonwealth Office, 1970-72; Chairman, Scottish Council,
British Red Cross Society, 1976-86; Member, Queen's Body Guard for
Scotland (Royal Company of Archers); Member, Prince of Wales Council,
1976-83; Deputy Lieutenant for Roxburgh, 1962; Knight, Sovereign
Military Order of Malta, &c.

He married in 1943, Antonella, daughter of Major-General Sir Foster
Reuss Newland, KCMG, CB, by whom he had a two sons, Michael, Earl of
Ancram, MP; and Lord Ralph Kerr; and four daughters, Lady Mary; Lady
Cecil; Lady Clare wife of the Duke of Grafton's heir, the Earl of
Euston; and Lady Elizabeth, wife of the Duke of Buccleuch's heir, the
Earl of Dalkeith.

The Marquess is succeeded in his peerages by his elder son, Michael
Ancram, PC, DL, QC, Conservative MP for Devizes, who is married to Lady
Jane Fitzalan-Howard, daughter of the late 16th Duke of Norfolk, KG,
PC.

celebrated 18 January, 2005, in Westminster Cathedral by Cardinal
