MONTREAL (CP) - Actor Marc Favreau, who gained fame in Quebec playing
Sol the hobo clown, has died. He was 76.
Favreau died of cancer in hospital on Saturday.
In Ottawa, Gov. Gen. Michaelle Jean said Sunday she learned of
Favreau's death with great sadness.
"Sol, the great magician of words, has left us," she said in a
statement, adding he won hearts over the years and opened eyes with his
comedy.
"His voice will be sadly missed," she said.
Favreau, who studied at the Theatre du nouveau monde, created his
trademark character in the 1950s after a sojourn to Paris and delighted
theatre and TV audiences with his surrealist humour and playful
mangling of the French language.
He said he drew inspiration from another famous clown tramp, Charlie
Chaplin, to create a show that had both children and adults as fans.
