Christine Dortha Coleman

COLEMAN, Christine Dortha (93), died at home peacefully in Los
Angeles, California on Tuesday, October 2, 2007. She was born on
September 5, 1914 in Crawford County, Kansas.

She worked in the entertainment industry until recently, having
appeared in numerous motion pictures including AFI films (Being John
Malkovich, Meet the Fockers), foreign films and documentaries. She had
roles on television in music videos (Marilyn Manson, Madonna, Britney
Spears, Christina Aguilera), national commercials (Walt Disney, Pepsi,
Mercedes Benz, Snickers Candy), cable shows and situation comedies
(Seinfeld, Will and Grace, Grey's Anatomy) among others.

She attended performing arts classes at Los Angeles City College and
was a member of The Screen Actors Guild. Prior to Christine's acting
career, she was a thirty-one year employee of the Los Angeles City
Clerk's Office, retiring in 1980.

She was a humble lady who grew up in the Great Depression and led a
simple life. She resided in the same high-rise apartment for over
fifty years, never owned a car and enjoyed her privacy at home. In
public, she turned into a butterfly, who could belt out a song and
dance from her five-foot frame or mesmerize you with her unique face
so filled with character.

She will be greatly missed by all who knew her - family, co-workers,
friends and her caregiver, Nora Vergara. She is survived by her
brother Carl E. Coleman of Auburn, California; her nieces Dani
(Lindstrom) Jordan of Seabeck, Washington, Carmella (Coleman) Bicking;
Debra (Coleman) Jackson, Shirley (Fore) Kaufholtz, all of Sierra
Vista, Arizona and Sonia Fore of Lincoln, California; her nephews
Keith Coleman of Cathedral City, California, Leroy Fore of Granby,
Missouri, Edwin Lee (Bob) Fore of Bonanza, Oregon, Larry Foree of Elk
Grove, California and Paul Lindstrom of Dixon, California. She was
predeceased by her father John W. B. Coleman; mother Josephine R.
Nortier; stepfather Seraphin Martinache and sister Louella May
(Martinache) Lindstrom.

Graveside services will be held at Mount Olive Cemetery in Pittsburg,
Kansas on Saturday, October 13, 2007 at 10:00 a.m. She will be buried
next to her father John W. Coleman and maternal grandfather Peter
Nortier. Burial arrangements are being handled by Angelus Funeral Home
of Los Angeles and Brenner Mortuary of Pittsburg, Kansas. Donations in
lieu of flowers are suggested to The Screen Actors Guild Foundation
and The Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.

Published in the Los Angeles Times on 10/12/2007.

Many thanks for posting this one, Bob! I knew Miss Coleman at the City
Clerk's office in LA when I worked there. She was a senior clerk who was
eminently helpful, but if she felt she was being put upon, she could be
quite feisty....for someone touching 5' 1" or less.
I always liked her and respected her knowledge...she'd been around the shop
for ages. Lived at Park La Brea apts as I recall...and she didn't
drive...heresy in Los Angeles!

But she could walk to Ohrbach's, May Co, Desmonds, Silverwood's,
Coulter's, Mullen Bluett, Seibu and any number of coffee shops and
restaurants. But you're right, walking just ain't patriotic. I'm
surprised she wasn't arrested.

Seriously, did you know she'd become an actress after you worked with
her?

Yep, but if she wanted to do this in the past dozen years or more, she
wouldn't find most of the stores you mention. Ohrbach's went out in favor
or Seibu, which became the Peterson (Petersen?) Automobile Museum, and May
Co. is long gone, as is (I think) Silverwoods and Desmonds. However, she
could walk to 5670 Wilshire and visit the new studios of KNX, (CBS) which
moved out of Columbia Square about a year ago.
I drove by there a month ago, and it looked as forlorn and bereft as a
Minnesota drive-in movie in February.

I certainly didn't! And I'll have to rewatch Being John Malkovich or see
Meet the Fockers for the first time to see if I can spot her. Never caught
her in the commercials the obit mentioned either.

IMDB lists Being John Malkovich as her only credit. Not that they're a
fountain of accuracy...

I noticed that too, and IMDb is getting better, but sometimes they screw up,
especially on the minor performers.
They used to be much worse. I recall clicking on "Manila Calling" from
1942, and they had everyone listed ....except for the star, Lloyd Nolan!

I actually went to the graveside service yesterday. Her nephew and his
family were there. My aunt called and asked if I would take her. Turns out
we were distantly related. There weren't many people there that remembered
her, she's been gone a long time But it was a large extended family.
