Permalinkbecause they could spread all sorts of diseases to the patients.
Well, it seems it goes both ways -if the parents are STUPID enough to
make them visit highly contagious patients! (In this case, it could have
turned deadly for the kids!)

OliverBlueDog0630:
I work in healthcare in a large hospital. The worst thing I've seen
related to kids is parents who bring toddlers and BABIES in to visit
sick relatives. We had a patient in her 70s a few days ago on my unit
who had been with us for about two weeks. She was fairly ill and had
acquired C DIFF in the hospital. CDIFF, for those not in healthcare
stands for Clostridium Difficile, a bacteria that infects the gut and
causes diarrhea and is highly contagious.
The patients granddaughter, who is in her early 20s, came to visit with
her parents and her 2 kids (and infant less than a year old and what
looked to be a toddler no older than 4 years old.)
Our nurse manager went up to them and told them they were not allowed in
the room with grandma because she was under isolation due to the C DIFF
and kids weren't allowed on the unit. Staff have to wear PPE and gown up
when caring for the patient and visitors are limited to one person at a
time in full PPE (gown and gloves, thorough handwashing.)
Well, the mom was LIVID. She started screaming at the RNs and insisted
her kids can come in because it's "no big deal" and it's their great
grandmother so "all their germs are the same anyway" (I'm quoting her
verbatim.) So of course, security was called and they were escorted out.
Unless your child is sick themselves and needs medical attention, let
people know, hospitals and nursing homes are NO PLACE for children.
There are too many germs, patients need peace and quiet, and staff
aren't there to babysit your brats.
If you want your family to see the kids, learn to use the video call
features on your cell phones.
Rant over!!

Oh what the ----. Like...lady, C-DIFF can kill even young, relatively
healthy adults. An infant or preschooler would almost certainly be
toast.
OliverBlueDog0630
The nurse manager explained this to them in detail. They just yelled
louder and called her a bitch, hence, security escort out the door.

Seriously...at that point you start to wonder if they're actually that
dumb or if they don't like their children all that much.
OliverBlueDog0630
No, they really are that dumb.

Not only are hospital germs dangerous for kids but children constantly
pick up all kinds of viruses and bacteria at school or daycare. Bringing
a kid to a hospital full of elderly, potentially immunocompromised
people is a horrible idea.

Fun fact: It’s actually relatively common for infants and toddlers to be
colonized with c diff and not be sick. We don’t even send c diff testing
on them in the vast majority of cases. It’s super weird considering
diarrhea is one of the top killers of children worldwide, just not from
cdiff. Source (American Academy of Pediatrics)
Obvi those parents still should not have brought the kids to the
hospital though.

When I was young we weren't allowed to go past the waiting room at the
end of the hospital room floor because we weren't 18. When did things
change?
OliverBlueDog0630
When hospitals moved into "customer service" mode and now have an open
door to the community policy. Which is total BS.

This circumstance isn't about where kids do and do not belong, they
don't have the freedom of choice yet. This is about the mother's
ignorance about basic science. I'm going to guess she's
anti-vaccinations too. *sigh* Well we know how life will go for this
family.
