Wendy Wyland VanDerWoude, Olympic bronze medalist, dies

DATELINE: WEBSTER, N.Y.

Wendy Wyland VanDerWoude, who won the bronze medal in platform diving at the
1984 Summer Olympics, has died. She was 38.

The cause of death was not immediately known.

VanDerWoude's father, Vernon Wyland, said she had been experiencing migraine
headaches the past two years.

"She kept saying, 'I'm going to beat this thing,"' Wyland told the Rochester
Democrat and Chronicle. "I'm in total shock because of this."

Wyland said his daughter went to work Saturday at Rochester Institute of
Technology but fell ill. She was rushed to the hospital, where she was
pronounced dead.

VanDerWoude won the gold medal in the 10-meter platform diving at the 1982
World Championships, and won a gold medal in platform and a silver medal in
the 3-meter springboard diving at the 1983 Pan American Games. She was also
a seven-time national champion in the platform.

VanDerWoude finished third in the platform diving at the 1984 Los Angeles
Olympics behind gold medalist Zhou Jihong of China and Michele Mitchell of
the United States.

Shoulder injuries forced her to sit out most of the 1985 season, but
VanDerWoude competed in the 1986 World Championships, winning a bronze in
the platform.

I had a good friend who complained about frequent migraine headaches.
He died in Dec. 1994 at only 32, most likely of a cerebral hemorrhage
in the brain.
Ever since then I believe frequent migraines are warning signs of a
stroke and a doctor's visit is needed quickly.

"I have a terrific headache."

I remember her more for the CareFree bubble gum commercial that she did in
the late '80s.
