Managing Editor (and outgoing* Anchor) Norah O'Donnell elected to
conclude tonight's edition of The CBS Evening News with a tribute to
this latest late Navaho "code-talker"...and finished her fine tribute by
offering up her DEFINITiVE answer to that oft-asked question in this
newsgroup: Precisely how many NOW remain surviving?

O'Donnell stated there are but TWO left alive now that this 107-year-old
fellow is gone--though every alt-obits lurker knows that these
code-talkers have long demonstrated an uncanny faculty for defying such
diminishing counts.

The original link in alt.obituaries pointed to the obit for John Kinsel, Sr.
at the Navajo Nation web site. Except for the war years, John Kinsel, Sr.
lived in the area where he grew up. He taught the Navajo traditions to the
community and passed them on to younger generations. The web site itself has
a great breakdown on the community. It was an interesting read.

Hi Bryan,

I finally found the original web reference so if anyone wants to see the
article they can just click on this. Sorry about the link wrapping to a
second line. Copy the link and then put it in your browser.

"Navaho" is phonetic for Anglophones,
while "Navajo" is how the Spanish spelled
what they (the Spanish) called them.

The tribe's own name for themselves is Dine
(not sure how it's pronounced).
