As a versatile and award winning artist, William Bostick was noted for
exhibiting an extraordinary flair for creativity along with a deft eye
to detail.

That unique talent proved invaluable during World War II. As a Navy
intelligence officer, he was responsible for the design and
supervision of several military maps used during the invasions of
Normandy and Sicily.

A former administrator and secretary at the Detroit Institute of Arts
for nearly three decades, Mr. Bostick, 94, died of heart failure
Tuesday (Aug. 14, 2007) at his home in Bingham Farms. Funeral services
were held Friday in Farmington Hills.

"He was talented and skilled in his artistic abilities and well
respected throughout the art community," said Marilyn Wheaton, a
longtime friend and former colleague at the DIA, who is now director
of the Marshall Fredericks Sculpture Museum at Saginaw Valley State
University. After retiring from his post at the DIA in 1976, Mr.
Bostick taught calligraphy classes for more than a decade.

Describing his admiration for the centuries-old art form, Mr. Bostick
once noted in a Free Press interview in 1980: "Handwriting is one of
the most personal forms of self-expression we have. And with
computers, communication has become so mechanized that there are very
few forms of personal communication left."

Mr. Bostick also was proficient in watercolors. Three of his paintings
are in the DIA's permanent collection and some are displayed in public
and private collections throughout the state.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Jane; son, Christopher, and daughter,
Beatrice.
