LOS ANGELES - "Tonight Show" legend Johnny Carson died in a Los
Angeles hospital, not at his Malibu home as earlier reported, and
his body was cremated, his death certificate shows.

The Los Angeles County Department of Health Services death
certificate signed by Dr. Richard N. Gold showed Carson died at
6:50 a.m. on Jan. 23 at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. He was 79.

The immediate cause of death was 10 minutes of "respiratory
arrest" with the underlying cause 20 years of emphysema,
according to the death certificate, obtained Wednesday by The
Associated Press.

The family had announced Carson's death in a brief statement but
refused to disclose any details.

"He was surrounded by his family, whose loss will be
immeasurable," Carson nephew Jeff Sotzing told The Associated
Press in a statement announcing the death. He wouldn't provide an
exact time, location or cause of death.

NBC-TV, where Carson hosted the "Tonight Show" for 30 years
before retiring in 1992, reported that he died of emphysema at
his Malibu estate. The NBC report was picked up by news
organizations, including The Associated Press, with attribution.

There was no autopsy. Carson's body, which wasn't embalmed, was
cremated by Forest Lawn Memorial Park, Hollywood Hills, and the
ashes were given to the entertainer's wife, Alexis, four days
later, the death certificate showed.

Sotzing said Wednesday there would be no comment on the death
certificate information.

that is probably where he was pronounced dead by a physician. He may very
well have died at home but not pronounced until he got to the hospital.

According to what I saw reported tonight, the death certificate says
Carson was at the hospital when he went into a ten-minute respiratory
arrest, after which he was declared dead. The arrest was given as his
proximate cause of death; the underlying cause was his twenty-year bout
with emphysema.

Had he died at home it is highly unlikely he would have been taken to a
hospital, especially one nearly 31 miles from his house.
