Music producer and composer Quincy Jones has died at the age of 91.
Jones' publicist, Arnold Robinson, said he died on Sunday night at his
home in the Bel Air area of Los Angeles, surrounded by his family. His
vast legacy ranged from producing Michael Jackson's historic Thriller
album to writing prize-winning film and television scores and
collaborating with Frank Sinatra, Ray Charles and hundreds of other
recording artists.

From "The Illustrated Who's Who of the Cinema" (1983):

"Jones is a major figure in contemporary music whose syntheses of jazz
and pop though frowned on by purist critics - have brought him great
commercial success. He was educated at the Berklee School of Music in
Boston, studied with Nadia Boulanger and Olivier Messiaen in Paris, and
played (trumpet) with many great jazz artists, including Billie Holiday,
Lionel Hampton and Dizzie (sic) Gillespie. He turned to composing and
arranging, working with such brilliant vocalists as Frank Sinatra, Ray
Charles and Peggy Lee. His flexible musical attitudes also made him much
sought-after as a writer of film scores and television themes. He was
the first black musician to gain prominence in this field, being
nominated for an Oscar for the score of In Cold Blood. Frail and
delicate (he survived two operations for brain aneurysms in 1974), he
continues to work, mainly in the jazz-funk style."
