In the 1949 film "Kind Hearts and Coronets",the protagonist murders multiple
relatives in order to accede to the title of Duke of Chalfont.
In 1964 retired military man Alun Gwynne Jones was named a life peer by the
new Labour government. For whatever reason,he chose the title Baron Chalfont.

Despite the endangered lives of the family of the fictional Chalfont peerage,
the real Lord Chalfont turns 100 today.

(I note parenthetically that while the film's opening titles say "based on
the novel by Roy Horniman, the title of Horniman's novel was not "Kind
Hearts and Coronets"--a phrase quoted from the poem "Lady Clara Vere de
Vere" by Tennyson--but "Israel Rank",and the title Mr. Rank murders his
way to "Earl D'Ascoyne".Officially the name change was to avoid anti-Semitism
(Israel Rank, son of aristocratic lady and Jewish man, became Louis
D'Ascoyne Mazzini, son of aristocratic lady and Italian man) but I
wonder if not offending J. Arthur Rank, who ran a studio and a
cinema chain,played a part).

He may have been born in or near Chalfont St Giles in Buckinghamshire... About 20 miles northwest of London...

His full title is: RT Hon Baron Chalfont of Llantaruam in the County of Monmouthshire . The word Chalfont is Norman for "chalk spring"

Well,he turned 100 last month, but has now died
(so far the only obituary I've found is at the
paywalled Times of London site).

Also lately deceased is the 2nd Viscount Montgomery of Alamein,
only son of the field marshal, who with the Earl Castle Stewart
comprised the oldest same-day-birth pair in the peerage,
born August 18th 1928.
His title now descends to his only son,who only has daughters,
so will presumably die out.
