Victor Lawrence Assevero Pediatrician
Victor Lawrence Assevero, 87, a pediatrician in the District for 50 years,
died July 19 [2009] of pneumonitis, a lung disorder, at the Veterans
Administration Hospital in the District.
Dr. Assevero was born in Port of Spain, Trinidad. He received his
undergraduate degree in 1946 and his medical degree in 1950, both from
Howard University. After practicing family medicine in North Carolina, he
served as an Army doctor in Germany. Discharged in 1956, he completed his
pediatric residency at Freedmen's Hospital (now Howard University Hospital)
and opened a private practice in Northwest Washington. He also served as an
assistant professor of medicine at Howard.
He had a lifelong interest in public health and worked with the District's
public health department. Dr. Assevero was a member of the committee
responsible for the location and planning for Children's National Medical
Center and recently wrote an article, "Models of Health Care Delivery," that
appeared in this month's issue of the Journal of the American Medical
Association.
He was a member of the Omega Psi Phi fraternal organization and a past
president of the Caribbean American Intercultural Association. He was also
active in the National Medical Association and the Medico-Chirurgical
Society, which honored him this year for lifetime achievement in pediatrics.
Dr. Assevero was a self-taught painter and poet. He enjoyed golf and music
and was an avid reader, particularly of books about philosophy and spiritual
traditions.
Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Dolly Wint Assevero of the District;
four children, Vicki-Ann Assevero of New York, Anna Maria Assevero of Dobbs
Ferry, N.Y., Michael Assevero of Atlanta and John Assevero of the District;
and two granddaughters.
