It looks like nobody BIG has had the misfortune of having died the same day as Nelson Mandela with the resultant diminishing coverage. As soon as Mandela died, I really thought someone substantial would go the same day along the lines of C.S. Lewis and Aldous Huxley dying the same day as JFK; radio comedian Henry Morgan on the same day as Jackie Onassis; Farrah Fawcett / Michael Jackson; Prokofiev / Stalin; Carl "Alfalfa" Switzer / Cecil B. It should be pointed out that, in addition to Soviet icons Stalin and
Prokofiev, "Citizen Kane" co-writer* Herman Mankiewicz also died on
Thursday, March 5, 1953.
Now, that coincidence of deaths is one I didn't know before on
that important Mar. 5, '53 date that I only knew previously was when the
murdering dictator Stalin finally died!
Herman was only 55 from kidney failure--he was a heavy drinker.

Herman was the father of Frank (a journalist), who gave the sad
announcement of Robert Kennedy's death in June 1968.
Herman was one of 10 screenwriters who worked on "The Wizard of
Oz." (1939).
Why he was not given film credit for his brilliant work in
describing the lowly Kansas scene is beyond comprehension.
Also worked on "Pride of the Yankees" (1942) about Lou Gehrig,
and his final work: "The Pride of St. Louis" (1952) about Dizzy Dean. Dean
seems to have given TWO birth names: Jay Hanna, and Jerome Herman since I've
seen both credited as him, so I never know which one is the real one,
althouth I've seen Jay Hanna as the most credible! Appropriate for one of
the most colorful and funniest baseball players of all time!
http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/d/deandi01.shtml
Baseball-reference shows Jay Hanna Dean.
Frank's uncle was Joe (screenwriter and producer, too!) who
directed "All About Eve" (1950) and "Cleopatra" (1963).
Frank has a brother, Don, who is a television writer.
This is one family that definitely proves that one rare talent
is generated by genetics!
Frank will be 90 next May 16, far outliving his dad.

It also severely dates an anecdote told by Spider Robinson,
where someone supposedly met Welles and Mankiewicz at a bar,
I think on the fringes of the Cannes Film Festival, and first
complimented them on Citizen Kane, then asked and they confirmed
that Kane died alone, then asked "so how does anyone know that
his last word was `Rosebud'?" prompting them to walk out.
After I heard him tell this in a speech,he wrote it into
a book as told by a supernatural creature (a cluricaune),
which I think dulled it considerably (I couldn't help thinking
"Welles and Mankiewicz are talking to a WHAT?!").Only after that
did I look up when Mankiewicz died, but I don't think I made the
Stalin connection.

There was another rare TRIPLE in recent years, and I believe
that was the last time for celebs, unless I'm mistaken.
They were: Milton Berle (93), Billy Wilder (95), and Dudley
Moore (66) [Mar. 27, 2002].

If Richard Nixon (April 22, 1994) had died only 27 days later,
he would have been added to the (May 19) Henry Morgan, and Jackie O. duo as
a rare, and a very weird triple!

Thanks to the CIA-FBI for setting-him-up as the patsy, and their
mania for ever since emphasizing an assassin's middle name.
Nobody remembes (or cares about) Leon Czolgosz (McKinley, 1901)
middle name ('Frank'), or Charles Guiteau (James Garfield, 1881) middle name
('Julius'), although for some reason there was the infamous John Wilkes
Booth in 1865.
Then there was also Arthur Bremmer (didn't kill George Wallace,
1972), with no well-known middle name ('Herman'), now released from prison
since Nov. 2007.
The guy who won't be named with his middle name, still in a mental
hospital for John Lennon's 1980 murder.
James Earl Ray (M.L. King, 1968).
The other patsy/CIA-set-up assassin, Sirhan Sirhan (was his middle
name also 'Sirhan'?), for RFK in 1968, who never got within 3 inches of RFK
(2-3 feet *in front* of RFK) where the fatal bullet was fired into the
*right rear* of RFKs head, exactly where armed security guard to RFK, Thane
Eugene Cesar was standing, and admitted pulling out *his* gun.
http://obscurantist.com/oma/cesar-thane-eugene

"...Cesar - a supporter of the racist candidate George Wallace,
and outspoken in his hatred of the Kennedy's - was hired as a part-time
security guard just a few months before getting called up at the last minute
to personally escort Kennedy. Given the likely outcome of the elections,
this 26 year old plumber turned part-time security guard was suddenly the
armed personal bodyguard of the next President of the United States.

Cesar was guiding Kennedy by the arm when he was killed. He admitted drawing
his gun at the time of the killing. And lied about getting rid of the gun
before the killing. Years later he re-itterated his hatred of the Kennedy's.
And admitted it did kinda look bad, evidence-wise. But its probably all just
a big misunderstanding. ..."

I had been under the impression that Ed McMahon died the same day as Farrah and Michael Jackson, but after researching it for this post, he actually died two days earlier than them, on 6/23/2009. However, the death was not announced IIRC until the morning of the 25th, with Farrah's death being announced around Noon Eastern time that day and Jackson's death being announced about four or five hours after Farrah.

Elvis on Aug. 16, 1977.
Groucho on Aug. 19, 1977.

Didn't have to look-up either of those dates, they are so

Never forgot the shock of hearing them pass: one so young, the

All these "died the same day" rejoinders to my original posting were all quite swell. However, the thrust of my riginal posting was about somebody famous dying the same day as somebody more famous and, hence, getting the short end of the proverbial obituary coverage stick.

Granted, James Gandolfini received the lion's share of news coverage at the expense of Slim Whitman. However, I do remember sets of "obit twins" such as the aforementioned Yul Brynner and Orson Welles, and Jim Henson and Sammy Davis Jr. actually receiving an equitable amount of press.

I guess the most famous case involves Jesus Christ and St. Dismas both being crucified the same day. Here it is almost 2000 years later and people are still talking about Jesus. However, The very existence of Dismas, whom the nuns referred to as the "thief who stole Heaven," might be, at best, apocryphal. The Gospels refer to two unnamed thieves and from what I understand, the Roman Catholic Church came up with the nomenclature "Dismas" many years later.

A true case of "Would you know my name if I saw you in Heaven?"

John Ritter and Johnny Cash did NOT die on the same day, so you
were WRONG on that pairing!
Technically, you were incorrect.

John Ritter died on Sept. 11, 2003.
Johnny Cash died the next day, Sept. 12.
You must have thought Cash's passing was on the 11th, or Ritter
dying on the 12th.
Neither was the case.
So, you can unpair them in your mind and not mention that

John Ritter died on Sept. 11, 2003.
Johnny Cash died the next day, Sept. 12.
You must have thought Cash's passing was on the 11th, or Ritter
dying on the 12th.
Neither was the case.
So, you can unpair them in your mind and not mention that
twosome a-gain.
To quote the OP, "However, the thrust of my riginal [sic] posting was
about somebody famous dying the same day as somebody more famous and,
hence, getting the short end of the proverbial obituary coverage
stick." The point wasn't necessarily about two people dying on the
same day, but the attention their in-close-order deaths drew in the
media and among the public.

Johnny Cash died early Friday morning in Nashville. John Ritter died
late Thursday night in Los Angeles. They died at around the same time,
if you allow for the two-hour difference. The news on both deaths
broke at around the same time, and Ritter's death drew more attention
than Cash's because Ritter's was more surprising and shocking. That
each died on a different side of the same midnight doesn't matter to
the point the OP was making, nor did my reply to him say they died on
the same day.

I know you've been dying to use "technically, you were incorrect" on
me, and I guess I should regret you wasted your one shot on this.

BTW there's no hyphen in "again."

I think Brad is correct although the way I remember it is that Ritter's death initially got more attention because it was a which but as the day progressed editors realized the significance of Cash and his death coverage started to get bigger and they evened out. By the time of the evening news they were being given equal coverage .... At least that's how I remember it.

All these "died the same day" rejoinders to my original posting were all
quite swell. However, the thrust of my riginal posting was about somebody
famous dying the same day as somebody more famous and, hence, getting the
short end of the proverbial obituary coverage stick.
That's why I cited Jim Henson and Sammy Davis Jr., and John Ritter and
Johnny Cash. They were exactly on point, which may be why you missed
it.
John Ritter and Johnny Cash did NOT die on the same day, so you

Making that 2-hours all the difference in the world in the
two-different dates!
Quit trying to make important time differences not important!
Another example: Shemp Howard (Three Stooges) died just after
11pm on November 22, 1955.
Many obits of him said he died on November 23, which wasn't the
case, unless you live in a different time zone.
These wrongful death date mentions have now mostly been corrected
to the actual date he died where he was at the time.
1-hour makes a difference also (so does 1 minute if you die/born
at 11:59pm), and that's why we have the Midnight hour changing to the new
date.

I know that!
I liked the sound of accenting on the second syllable, and used
the hyphen to accentuate the funny idea: a-GAIN.
IIRC, it was H.V. Kaltenborn (announcing Dewey's "victory" on the
radio over Truman in the '48 election), that I remember hearing his voice,
and he used that wonderful a-GAIN pronounciation in his unique way.

It's not the point anyway. They died during the same news cycle, which
is the only relevant "date" here, as what we're talking about are
people who were cheated of their proper due because someone else died
at nearly the same time and grabbed off some of the coverage. Nobody
ever said Ritter and Cash died on the same day.

Cute, but John Ritter didn't suddenly travel east of the PT zone
so he could die on the 12th and link with J. Cash.
If you were in Denver, CO; Shemp Howard died on Nov. 23, 1955
instead of the Nov. 22 he did die on in Los Angeles (PT).
This is all hogwash/crapola with arbitrarily changing the death
dates, depending upon where the person *might be* instead of where the
person actually was at the time of death, with the coroner reporting the
date of death where the deceased was and not 1+ time zones later.

You definitely implied that idea by saying the following in citing
Henson-Davis, and then Ritter-Cash, which I quote below.
Nothing from you in the slightest on saying Ritter-Cash were NOT
dead on the same date, while citing Henson-Davis that did die on the same
date in connecting the two different pairs.
You can spin it any way you want to try to weasel out of what you
plainly said, and your quote below says is the opposite of your unusual
explanation above about a "news cycle" that talks about two deaths very
close in time, but nothing about two different dates across the Midnight
Hour.

First I "implied" it, and then I "plainly said" it. The fact that I
did neither of those things doesn't mean squat to him, of course.

De Mille; Bunny Berenson / everybody else on 9/11 ...
How many sets of famous or otherwise prominent people were born on the
same day?
(I just noted on another group an unusual coincidence in the death of
the 3rd Baron Noel-Buxton,a peer who got in the press for using the House
of Lords to sleep off drunkenness, that both he and his son who succeeded
him were born the same days as other peers).

South African President Marais Viljoen and Japanese Prince Mikasa were
born on the same day.

Oh, wow! What a great "catch" you made on that one, Mark! LOL
What was that you say about the most famous duo-deaths of all time:
Thomas Jefferson and John Adams.
(July 4, 1826, the 50th anniversary of the Declaration of
Independence celebration!)

BTW, someone pointed out that Prokofiev and Stalin have a neat
date mnemonic on the year if you only remember the month/day:

Mar. 5, '53 written as 5/3/53, if written in the British/European
way of writing dates!

And another very famous TRIO of doomed deaths you ignored as so
obvious as Bonnie & Clyde:

Buddy Holly, The Big Bopper (J.P. Richardson) and Ritchie
Valens, on Feb. 3, 1959.

Another famous death duo that are so opposite in occupations:

Margaret Thatcher, 87, and Annette Funicello, 70 (April 8,
2013).
