General of the Army Vladimir Govorov died in Moscow at the age of 81.
He was the head of the Russian Committee of War and Military Service
Veterans in the past several years.
Govorov died on Sunday evening after a serious illness, committee
deputy head Bagrat Knyazchyan told Itar-Tass on Monday.
"We will always remember him as a wonderful man, a caring father and
grandfather, a devoted and committed comrade," he said.
A World War II participant, Govorov rose from a soldier to a general of
the army. He commanded the Moscow Military District for a long time and
was a Soviet defence minister.
After retirement, he continued active public work, including at the
Russian Public Chamber.
The commemoration ceremony for the general will be held at the Russian
Army Cultural Centre on August 17.
