Franklin Walter Stickle, 85, of Mooresville, son of Mary James and Warren Marion Stickle, passed away on Saturday, January 27, 2018 at the Gordon Hospice House, Statesville.
Frank was born on November 22, 1932 in Buffalo, NY. He graduated from SUNY Buffalo with a degree in Elementary Education, but his love was radio. His career highlights include Deejay and newsman for WMCA “Good Guy” Radio in New York City, and news reporter and TV host for WTNH-TV, New Haven, CT. Frank later served as Director of Marketing and Community Relations for General Instrument’s AmTote Division in New Haven, and subsequently as a substitute teacher for high schools in New Haven, Las Cruces, NM, and Mooresville, NC.
His pastimes included lots of reading, and conquering the NY Times crossword puzzle. He loved the New York Yankees, and in 1964 and 1965 had the thrill of donning pinstripes to play exhibition games with fellow NYC on-air personalities and entertainers, where he got to sit in the dugout with Mantle and Maris.
He leaves his wife of 53 years, Barbara Caneva Stickle; his son David George Stickle; daughter-in-law, Candice Crim Stickle; his amazing grandsons, Aidan Ronald and Brannon Walter Stickle; and several nieces and nephews. His parents and his two brothers Warren and Irwin Cole Stickle preceded him in death.
A gathering for friends will be held on Thursday, February 1 from 5:00-7:00 PM at Cavin-Cook Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Gordon Hospice House, 2341 Simonton Road, Statesville, NC 28625 and/or American Heart Association, 128 South Tyron St., Suite 1588, Charlotte, NC 28202.
