Eugene Douglas Spangler Sr., 87, of Sarasota
died Dec. 11, 2010.

National Cremation & Burial Society is handling
the arrangements.

He was known as "Gene" or "Coach" to many
of his friends and former students, Gene Spangler
was loved and will be missed by many.

Born in 1922, he participated in school sports
as a boy which eventually led to his playing both
professional football for the Detroit Lions and
professional baseball for the Braves organization.

He later taught and coached sports in Sarasota
County schools. He was very proud of the 1957
state champ SHS Baseball team. He also served
as the Director of the Sailor Circus for a number
of years. He was the Principal of Brookside
Middle School for 15 years before retiring.

He is predeceased by his wife of 58 years, Muriel.

He is survived by his son, E. Douglas Jr.
(Jan Spanos) Spangler of Parrish, Fla.; brother,
Gary Spangler of Texas; three grandsons, and
eight great grandchildren.

He was a long time member of First Presbyterian
Church, Oak Street in downtown Sarasota, where
the services will be held on Friday, Dec. 17, 2010
at 4 p.m.

A reception will follow in Parrish Hall.
