Edward Albert Dies
By Army Archerd

Actor Edward Laurence Albert died Friday. He was 55.

His wife actress Kate Woodville said he had suffered from lung cancer
for 17 months. Despite his illness he had tended to his ailing father,
actor Eddie Albert, who died at the age of 97, May 26, 2005. His mother
was actress Margo Albert and both parents were once black-listed.

Edward died at home in Malibu where a Chumash medicine woman performed
a post-passing traditional ceremony. Wife Kate said Edward "had a deep
love for the ocean, mountains and canyons as well as the Chumash native
culture of this area. He worked tirelessly to preserve what he could of
the natural wonders and native sites in both Malibu and the Santa
Monica Mountains."

The Escondido Canyon has been renamed in his honor as the Edward Albert
Escondido Trail and Waterfalls.

Edward's first film was "Fool Killer" at age 11 opposite Anthony
Perkins, He costarred with Goldie Hawn in "Butterflies are Free" (1972)
for which he won a Golden Globe.

He had 126 films and TV appearances to his credit. In 2003 he costarred
in Ed Begley Jr.'s theater production, "Cesar and Ruben," the musical
about union hero Cesar Chavez.

"His true passion lay with his family first," said wife Kate. "He
devoted the last ten years of his life to caring for his ailing father,
Eddie. His neighbors, friends and family knew him as a fierce and
dedicated environmentalist. He touched many lives, even saved a few. He
will be remembered as a magnificent man, loving father and husband."

He is also survived by their daughter Thais Albert, singer/songwriter
of the rock band Sugar in Wartime. A service is being planned at the
Self-Realization Center.

What a shock! Outlived his dad only a year!
Sad to hear. Didn't he and Kate Jackson have quite a serious romance
back in the early seventies? If I remember correctly, seemed they
co-hosted together one week on the Mike Douglas Show? Always thought
they made a good couple.

This 1974 article from Photoplay says you're right:

http://www.katejackson.net/photoplay.html

With our god-like knowledge of the future, we know that Jackson wound
up getting married three times, but never to Albert, and has remained
single since she dumped #3 in 1993. Albert married his wife Katherine
in 1978 and was still married to her when he died.

I can't find a reference to that. IMDb lists only one appearance by
Albert on the Douglas show, and that was on 8 September 1977. One of
Kate's seven listed appearances on the show came the following day.

IMDb lists only 314 of the thousands of Douglas shows, so it's possible
that Jackson and Albert were on together during that week in September,
even though by 1977 their romance had likely gone cold. (They each
married other people the following year.) The 8th and 9th fell on
Thursday and Friday.

Matt, please see the link to an article re Kate Jackson and Edward
Albert. You were right; they were an item for awhile in the seventies.
They appeared in several tv movies (The Savage Bees, Death Cruise), and
Albert appeared on the Rookies as well.

...one of my favourite "guilty pleasures" is a movie Albert did in 1979
with Lee Van Cleef, Lionel Stander, Karen Black and Robert Alda that was
released under a combination of titles; I have a VHS of it as THE
RIP-OFF and a DVD of it as THE SQUEEZE. Albert is the son of a thief who
brings safecracker Van Cleef back to New York from a Mexican exile for
one last job. Albert looks incredibly pasty in it -- as if he was eating
margarine straight -- whoever mixed the soundtrack music should have
been executed. But it still winds up being an entertaining
Saturday-afternoon popcorn chewer...

My favorite bit is that every time Ed starts to get
romantic with
beautiful naked woman #2, his head begins to hurt.
Hilarious.

Mine is "A Time to Die," from 1982. Ed's beautiful naked wife is shot
dead by Nazis during WW2, and he himself is shot in the back of the
head and left for dead. However, Ed survives (apparently he was shot
in a non-vital area) and spends the rest of the movie hunting down the
Nazis who murdered his beautiful naked wife. Along the way, Ed meets
another beautiful naked woman, so one may infer that everything works
out just fine.

"A Time to Die" was directed by Matt Cimber, who was briefly married to
Jayne Mansfield. One of the writing credits is Mario Puzo! It was also
Rex Harrison's last feature film ( he did a few TV movies afterwards)

They couldn't decide what to call it?

There are at least two other SQUEEZEs,a 1977 crime flick with Stacy Keach
and the 1987 gadget caper with Michael Keaton and Liane Langland among
others.

Very sad to die that young. "Butterflies are Free" was the first
R-rated film I ever saw and I haven't seen it since. Wonder what I
would think of it today.

Weird coincidence...my first R-rated film was "Shampoo", which *also* co-starred
Goldie Hawn....r

Even though Edward Albert was not a superstar, he was well known enough
that I'm surprised his death has not hit the wires (AP, Reuters) as of
yet.

This gifted actor is a lock for both memoriam segments, IMHO.
