Clint Walker -- best known for playing a TV cowboy on the hit western series "Cheyenne" -- has died ... TMZ has learned.

Clint died suddenly Monday in the company of his wife and daughter ... according to a source close to the family. It's still unclear what caused his death, but a family member says they believed it was a heart issue.

Walker broke into the Hollywood scene after landing a role in the classic film "The Ten Commandments." With his good looks and imposing physique -- Clint stood 6'6" -- he was cast as the roaming cowboy hero, Cheyenne Bodie, in 1955. The show aired for 7 seasons.

After "Cheyenne" ended, Clint starred in the only movie ever directed by Frank Sinatra, "None But the Brave," and "The Dirty Dozen." He also returned to the Western genre with films like "More Dead Than Alive" and "The Great Bank Robbery."

Walker continued working in showbiz until the late '90s, when he voiced a character in "Small Soldiers."

He was 90.

RIP

"The Great Bank Robbery" was always one of my favorite forgotten films of the 1960's, a western comedy about several groups of people who all decide to break into the same bank vault on the same evening. I haven't seen it in about 30 years, and laughed the whole way thru. It is available on DVD on a double feature with a movie called "The Great Bank Hoax" which I've never seen, but some clips are available on youtube. Clint Walker was the undercover Texas Ranger trying to stop the robbery, but Zero Mostel stole the movie as usual, and Larry Storch and Akim Tamaroff were brilliant as a couple Mexican banditos. Kim Novak also does a Lady Godiva. Highly recommended if you should ever come across it.

In May 1971, Walker narrowly escaped death in a skiing accident at Mammoth Mountain, California. In a fall from a ski lift, Walker was pierced through the heart with a ski pole. He was taken to a hospital and pronounced dead. However, a doctor detected faint signs of life and rushed Walker to surgery, where his damaged heart was repaired. Within two months, Walker was working again.
